Ibrahima Konaté set to join Real Madrid

Real Madrid will officially complete the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konate after the FIFA World Cup, with reports indicating that all aspects of the deal have now been finalised.

The Spanish giants have been working behind the scenes to secure the services of the Liverpool centre-back, and the move is now only awaiting the conclusion of France’s World Cup campaign before being formally announced.

According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, the transfer agreement has been completed, paving the way for Konate to begin a new chapter at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The development comes after the French international confirmed last month that he would be leaving Liverpool. Konate turned down a contract proposal from the Premier League club, opting instead for a lucrative offer from Real Madrid as the European powerhouse continues to strengthen its squad for the future.

A lucrative Bernabeu move

Konate is set to be rewarded handsomely for the switch. The 27-year-old will reportedly earn around £400,000 per week and receive a signing-on bonus worth approximately £17.3 million after agreeing to a four-year contract with the Spanish club.

The package underlines the importance Madrid place on securing one of Europe’s most highly rated defenders. Having established himself as a key figure during his time at Liverpool, Konate arrives with a reputation for defensive solidity, aerial dominance and composure on the ball.

His arrival is also expected to bolster a Madrid backline preparing for a new era under manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach is believed to view the Frenchman as a central figure in his plans, with Konate expected to play a leading role in the club’s pursuit of domestic and European honours.

Reunion and French connection

A move to Madrid will also reunite Konate with former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has already made the switch to the Spanish capital.

Beyond that reunion, the defender will become part of a growing French contingent at the club. He is set to join compatriots Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy, further strengthening the French influence within the Madrid dressing room.

World Cup focus before Madrid unveiling

Before completing the move, Konate’s attention remains firmly fixed on international duty. France will head into the World Cup determined to reclaim the trophy after falling short in the 2022 final against Argentina.

Having lifted the title in 2018, Les Bleus will once again be among the favourites, with Konate expected to play a significant role in their campaign across North America.

Once France’s World Cup journey concludes, Real Madrid are expected to unveil their newest defensive star, bringing an end to months of speculation and completing one of the most significant transfers of the year.
