Ibrahima Konate joins Real Madrid after extended post-World Cup break

Ibrahima Konate has joined Real Madrid after completing his extended post-World Cup break.

The France international is now training with José Mourinho’s squad, beginning a new chapter at the Spanish club after five seasons with Liverpool.

The 27-year-old arrives to address Madrid’s need for greater defensive strength, speed and experience. His ability to defend large spaces, win physical duels and dominate aerial challenges could prove especially useful when the team plays with an advanced defensive line.

Konate made 183 appearances for Liverpool and won the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups during his time at Anfield. He also understands the pressure of Champions League football and major European fixtures, experience Madrid hope will help during a demanding campaign.

The defender joined as a free agent after his Liverpool contract expired and has signed with Real Madrid through 2030. His arrival also gives Mourinho more options when choosing his centre-back pairing, with Éder Militão and Dean Huijsen among the possible partners.

However, Konate has not been promised a starting position. Antonio Rudiger and Raul Asencio remain part of the competition, while Madrid could still recruit another central defender. Familiarity with teammates Kylian Mbappe, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga should nevertheless help him settle quickly.
