Ibrahima Konate to stay at Liverpool

Ibrahima Konate is reportedly not close to agreeing a new contract with Liverpool FC, with negotiations over an extension said to have slowed despite earlier optimism from the defender.

The 26-year-old centre-back has just seven weeks remaining on his current deal, raising uncertainty over his long-term future at Anfield as discussions continue without a breakthrough.

Only last month, Konate struck a confident tone about his situation, insisting progress had been made in talks.

“For a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement. For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted.”

However, according to Ian Doyle for The Liverpool Echo, the situation has shifted, with the club and player not as aligned as previously suggested, and a resolution now not considered imminent.

Liverpool are believed to hold Konate in high regard given his physical presence and defensive qualities, but concerns over his inconsistency this season have reportedly made the club cautious about committing to one of their higher wage structures.

The hierarchy are understood to be assessing whether his performances justify a significant long-term financial commitment at this stage.

Allowing a first-choice defender in his prime to leave on a free transfer would represent a significant setback for the club’s squad planning, particularly so soon after the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

For Liverpool supporters, the prospect of another major exit without a transfer fee is likely to intensify scrutiny on the club’s handling of contract renewals as the summer window approaches.

The uncertainty arrives at a sensitive moment for Liverpool as they look to finalise contract decisions across several key players ahead of the summer rebuild.

Konate, who has been a regular feature in the defensive rotation when fit, remains an important part of the squad’s structure, yet his future now appears less secure than previously indicated.
