Algerian star Ibrahim Maza earns FIFA recognition as one of Africa’s standout World Cup performers

Algerian midfielder Ibrahim Maza has been recognised by FIFA as one of Africa’s standout players from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after producing a series of eye-catching performances that showcased his exceptional dribbling ability and attacking quality on football’s biggest stage.

Although Algeria’s overall campaign failed to meet expectations, Maza emerged as one of the brightest individual performers in the tournament.

His displays earned praise from FIFA, which included the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder in its list of ten African players who left a lasting impression during the global competition.

The 2026 World Cup featured ten African nations, with nine progressing to the Round of 16, including several teams that advanced as the best third-placed finishers.

Across the tournament, numerous players enhanced their reputations through impressive individual performances, prompting FIFA to highlight those who consistently stood out for their national teams.

Among those recognised alongside Maza were Senegal’s Pape Gueye and Ismaïla Sarr, Ivory Coast duo Amad Diallo and Yan Diomandé, DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa, Egypt midfielder Emam Ashour, Morocco playmaker Azzedine Ounahi and Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Vozinha.

Despite Algeria’s struggles in terms of overall performances, FIFA singled out Maza for his influence and technical quality throughout the competition.

According to the world football governing body, “Ibrahim Maza managed to shine during the 2026 World Cup.“

FIFA also highlighted one of the tournament’s defining moments for the 20-year-old, recalling his outstanding display against Jordan during the second round of the group stage.

“The 20-year-old Algerian prodigy notably stole the show against Jordan, during the second day of the group stage (2-1) where he was logically elected Player of the Match,” FIFA stated.

Statistics further underlined Maza’s impact. The attacking midfielder finished the group stage as the competition’s leading dribbler with 12 successful take-ons before ending the tournament with 14 completed dribbles overall.

Reflecting on those numbers, FIFA added: “The best dribbler in the group stage (12), the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder was indeed among the specialists in this area, with 14 successful dribbles in total during this 2026 edition.”

Maza’s performances have further strengthened his growing reputation as one of Algeria’s brightest young talents. Still only 20, the attacking midfielder continues to attract attention for his technical ability, creativity and confidence in one-on-one situations.

Alongside Riyad Mahrez, who was the only Algerian included in FIFA’s Power Rankings of the tournament’s top 100 individual performers, Maza’s World Cup campaign reinforced his status as one of the country’s most promising footballers.

While Algeria’s collective showing fell short of expectations, Maza’s individual displays ensured he emerged from the tournament with enhanced recognition, earning praise from FIFA and establishing himself among the most exciting young African players to watch in the years ahead.
