Algeria’s rising star Ibrahim Maza has opened up about his first Africa Cup of Nations experience, describing the 2025 tournament as both thrilling and challenging.
Speaking at a press conference with Bayer Leverkusen, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder called the competition a “superb experience,” despite Algeria’s quarter-final exit against Nigeria.
“It was a great tournament, with some excellent matches. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Nigeria, and they deserved to qualify,” Maza said, visibly still processing the defeat.
Maza also commented on the final between Senegal and Morocco, which he watched closely.
“You could see that both teams wanted to win at all costs. It was unique, full of emotion and intensity,” he added.
Reflecting on Algeria’s elimination, Maza admitted that the disappointment was hard to take.
“I was a bit angry and sad after the match. To go out like that is bitter,” he said, acknowledging his ambitions of reaching the later stages. Having started as a substitute in the early rounds before establishing himself in the starting lineup, he believes the tournament was a valuable learning experience. “We have to learn from our mistakes, continue to develop, and do better next time,” Maza said.
Maza’s performances made him a fan favourite, and his decision to commit to Algeria — despite eligibility for Germany and Vietnam — has further strengthened his ties with the national team.

Looking ahead, Maza is already setting his sights on the 2026 World Cup, aiming to play a leading role in a new generation of Algerian talent.
“This experience has given me motivation to improve and help my team achieve more. The World Cup is the next big goal,” he concluded.
