Ibrahim Hassan outlines Egypt’s World Cup preparations, weighs in on Mohamed Salah’s future
Egypt national team manager Ibrahim Hassan has shed light on the Pharaohs’ approach during the ongoing international break, as the team intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with high-profile friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Spain.
The North Africans head into their next test against Spain in buoyant mood after a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their previous outing.
Speaking to ON Sport 1, Hassan revealed that the technical team’s focus in camp has been on establishing a defined tactical identity tailored to the squad’s strengths, while carefully analysing opponents.
“Our plan is built on implementing a clear system that suits the team’s capabilities,” he explained. “We studied our opponents closely, particularly Saudi Arabia, who are very organised and disciplined in their movements. Every team has its own style, and that demands specific preparation.”
Attention now turns to a stern challenge against Spain, a match Hassan expects to stretch his side.
“Spain will be a very difficult opponent,” he said. “They rely heavily on quick movement and rapid reactions, so our players must be alert and sharp throughout the game.”
He added that the encounter would require a different tactical approach, with an emphasis on transitions. “This match comes with its own calculations. We need greater technical discipline, especially in switching quickly between defence and attack. Hossam Hassan understands these demands well and is capable of communicating them effectively to the players.”
Hassan also addressed the absence of Mohamed Salah, who is currently sidelined with injury, acknowledging the impact of the Liverpool star’s absence on the team.
“Technically, we are missing Salah because of his immense value—whether in creating chances or influencing how opponents approach the game,” he noted. “He always commands special attention from defenders.”
Beyond the national team, Hassan offered his perspective on Salah’s future after the forward confirmed he will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season.
“His decision was certainly well thought out,” he said. “He understands his situation and the next step in his career—it’s not something taken lightly.”
Hassan suggested that remaining in Europe should be Salah’s priority, expressing reservations about a potential move to Major League Soccer. “From a technical standpoint, continuing in Europe is the best option. The American league doesn’t seem as appealing in terms of spotlight—I haven’t heard much about Lionel Messi since his move there.”
Instead, he pointed to Saudi Arabia as a viable destination, highlighting the league’s growing profile.
“The Saudi League could be a strong option, especially with top players like Cristiano Ronaldo already there. Clubs such as Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, or Al-Ahli would represent a significant step if he chooses that path.”
Despite his absence, Hassan stressed that Salah remains committed to the national team setup.
“He is very professional and always follows the technical instructions closely. He would have loved to be with the team, and we are all hoping for his swift return in the next phase.”
