Ibrahim Cissoko switches allegiance to represent Guinea
Guinea has gained a new attacking option as Ibrahim Cissoko has decided to represent the Syli National, switching his sporting nationality from the Netherlands.
The 22-year-old winger, currently on loan at Bolton from Toulouse, has impressed in League One this season. He has made 25 appearances, totaling 975 minutes, and scored four goals, establishing himself as a key player for the English club.
Born in Nijmegen, Cissoko came through the local club’s academy and progressed through the Dutch youth system before turning professional in July 2022.
He moved to Toulouse in the summer of 2023 but struggled to secure a regular spot in the French side, leading to loan spells at Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday, and now Bolton.
Cissoko has previously represented the Netherlands at youth level, playing in a friendly against Norway and making two appearances in the Euro U21 qualifying matches against Moldova and Georgia in September 2024.
His decision to switch allegiance now opens the door for him to feature for Guinea under coach Paulo Duarte.
With the change confirmed, Cissoko is eligible for selection in the upcoming friendlies against Togo on 27 March and Benin on 31 March, both scheduled in Morocco.
Observers suggest that his arrival could add pace and versatility to the Guinea attack, giving the national team a fresh option on the wings.
Duarte’s squad has already been preparing for the March fixtures, and Cissoko’s inclusion is expected to bolster the team’s offensive options.
At 22, he brings both youth and experience from European leagues, a combination that could prove valuable in upcoming matches and beyond.
The winger’s choice also reflects a growing trend of players opting to represent their countries of origin, enhancing national teams’ depth while gaining international exposure at senior level.
For Guinea, the addition of Cissoko signals ambition in strengthening its squad ahead of important fixtures.
