South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is eager to make a strong impression at Chicago Fire following his transfer from Orlando Pirates.
The 20-year-old has been actively participating in pre-season matches, using the period to settle in with his new teammates and adapt to his surroundings.
Mbokazi described the move abroad as the right step for his career.
“I was comfortable playing locally, but testing myself in a foreign league is a challenge I’m ready for. I won’t disappoint,” he told reporters at a press conference, as reported by On Tap Sports Net.
He added, “Chicago Fire saw something in me, and I’m committed to delivering on that. I’m willing to give even more.”
Reflecting on the scrutiny he faced back home, the KZN-native said, “It was tough with people saying different things, but I persevered. I’m still very young, and that gives me the chance to explore my talent at a higher level. I enjoy being here, and I’m grateful to everyone who made it possible.”
Mbokazi also emphasized patience in his development, noting, “Everything has its own timing. I’m enjoying my time here, and if the chance comes to play in a higher league, it will happen naturally. For now, I’m focused on contributing here.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming MLS season, the defender pledged his commitment to the club and its fans: “I’m very excited to be part of this team. I won’t let the club or the supporters down. They’ve welcomed me warmly, and I’m happy to be here.”
