I will not be a substitute player at Liverpool - Mohamed Salah

Liverpool is facing a growing dilemma surrounding Mohamed Salah after initial talks between the club and the Egyptian forward’s agent highlighted a widening rift.

Despite the club’s efforts to keep the matter from dominating headlines in January, sources indicate that no easy solution is in sight.

Reports suggest Salah made it clear in discussions with his agent, Ramy Abbas, that he refuses to accept a substitute role—a position he was placed in during recent matches and notably for the Champions League tie against Inter Milan, which he skipped due to what he viewed as mistreatment by management and coaching staff.

Abbas reportedly echoed the player’s stance in meetings with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, leaving Salah’s position unchanged as he temporarily left Anfield to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Inside Liverpool, officials acknowledge that Salah’s refusal to play a reduced role “poses a real dilemma.” The club’s defensive performance has improved during his absence, while the forward’s attacking stats this season—five goals and four assists—have yet to secure him an indisputable place in the starting XI.

Negotiations continue, with Hughes leading discussions alongside full backing from Fenway Sports Group and CEO Michael Edwards. Liverpool have also confirmed that they are open to the possibility of Salah moving on, if it serves the team’s long-term interests.
