Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa has revealed that his decision to miss out on DR Congo’s Africa Cup of Nations squad was taken with one clear objective in mind: being fully fit and ready for the upcoming World Cup play-offs in March.
While AFCON is underway in Morocco, the striker believes prioritising his long-term international contribution was the right call.
Wissa’s absence from the continental tournament follows a knee injury sustained during pre-season duty with the national team, a setback that disrupted his rhythm earlier in the campaign.
Although the 29-year-old has since recovered and found form with Newcastle, he felt his condition was not yet optimal for the demands of a major tournament.
“I’m not in the best shape to represent my country right now. It’s a very difficult decision to make,” Wissa told Foot RDC.
Despite the disappointment of missing AFCON, his focus has shifted firmly to the World Cup qualification phase.
“The most important thing now is to get back in shape so I can help the team during the play-offs in March.”
The striker stressed his emotional connection to the national team, adding: “The DRC holds a special place in my heart. I can only wish my team-mates the best of luck in this AFCON.”
DR Congo have started their AFCON campaign positively, recording a victory over Benin in their opening group match. That result has eased immediate pressure on the squad, allowing Wissa to focus on his rehabilitation and form at club level without distraction.
The DR Congo national football team will face the winner of the match between Jamaica and New Caledonia in their final inter-confederation World Cup playoff match.
The final inter-confederation play-off is scheduled for March 31, 2026, in Mexico, with the winner securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
