‘I relied on Al Hilal and Al Merreikh players to qualify Sudan for AFCON’ – Kwesi Appiah

Kwesi Appiah has revealed that his reliance on players from Al Hilal and Al Merreikh was crucial in guiding the Sudan national football team to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team faced significant challenges, including civil unrest that forced them to play all qualifiers away from home.

The ongoing conflict has also led to the suspension of the domestic league, which traditionally supports the national squad.

In an emotional reflection, Appiah, who previously captained Ghana and coached the Black Stars at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, expressed the difficulties the team endured.

“It’s been tough without a domestic league. Since I took over, I’ve had to rely on players from just two clubs—Al Hilal and Al Merreikh. Even now, only Al Hilal remains active,” Appiah told CAF.

Despite these obstacles, Appiah highlighted the determination of the players, some of whom compete abroad, mainly in Libya, to maintain their form.

“The lack of league football limits our options, but the players who remain active have been giving their all. Some also play abroad, mainly in Libya, which helps keep them in form.”

With their sights set on AFCON in Morocco, Sudan aims to make a significant impact under Appiah’s inspiring leadership.
