Chadi Riad has issued an apology to Moroccans after a costly social media mistake

Moroccan international Chadi Riad has issued a heartfelt apology to fans of the Atlas Lions after admitting to what he described as a mistake, following his interaction with Senegal’s AFCON celebration posts on social media.

The defender’s response comes amid the ongoing controversy over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, which remains in dispute despite the Confederation of African Football’s Appeals Committee awarding the trophy to Morocco by default.

Senegal has since taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and has publicly celebrated the title twice during international friendlies against Peru and Gambia.

The situation has stirred strong reactions across Morocco, particularly after several national team players were found to have interacted with posts shared by Senegalese players during their celebrations at the Stade de France.

The actions, especially “likes” on social media, were widely criticised by supporters who view the title as still being contested at the highest legal level.

Reports from Moroccan outlet Hesport indicated that several players were involved, including Ismael Saibari, Eliesse Ben Seghir, Samir Al-Murabit, Osama Targhalin and Yassin Kishat. The backlash quickly intensified, placing the players at the centre of a growing public storm.

After Saibari earlier clarified that his action was unintentional, Riad also stepped forward to address the issue directly. In a message shared on his Instagram account, the Crystal Palace defender acknowledged his error and expressed remorse.

“I made a mistake, I apologise, and I understand the frustration of the Moroccan people,” Chadi Riad said.

Riad went on to reaffirm his commitment and loyalty to the national team, emphasising the deep connection he has built over the years.

“Since the age of 14 I have been defending this shirt, so do not doubt for a moment my love for this country. Dima Maghreb.”

His apology comes at a time when emotions remain heightened, with the final decision on the AFCON title still pending at CAS. As the legal battle continues, the incident highlights the intense scrutiny players face both on and off the pitch, particularly in moments of national tension.
