Celta Vigo midfielder Ilaix Moriba has opened up about his regret over leaving Barcelona as a young player, describing his decision as a “mistake.”
The 22-year-old Guinea international, who rose through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, chose not to renew his contract with the Catalan giants in 2021, opting instead for a move to RB Leipzig. However, his career has not reached the heights many predicted during his promising early days at Camp Nou.
“I made a mistake leaving Barça. I was very young and had a lot of pressure. For a moment I thought it was all over. Luckily now I’m happy at Celta,” he told AS.
Moriba’s departure from Barcelona came after he rejected a contract extension, seeking more playing time and financial security.
His move to RB Leipzig, however, did not yield the expected success, as he struggled to establish himself in the Bundesliga.
After a loan spell at Valencia, Moriba joined Celta Vigo in 2023, where he has gradually rediscovered his form and confidence.
Despite his struggles, Moriba remains a key figure for the Guinea national team, representing his country with pride.
Now settled at Celta, Moriba is focused on rebuilding his career and making the most of his second chance. “I’m happy here,” he said, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to reignite his passion for the game.
