Mohamed Salah arrives in Turkey to seal Trabzonspor move

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has questioned Mohamed Salah’s decision to join Trabzonspor, admitting he expected the Egyptian forward to continue his career at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Salah’s move to the Turkish side was confirmed this week after months of speculation linking him with Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer. The former Liverpool star instead opted for a new challenge in Turkey, where thousands of supporters gathered for his unveiling as Trabzonspor’s latest marquee signing.

However, Carragher believes the 34-year-old still had the quality and ambition to compete at the highest level in Europe.

The former defender, who played alongside some of Liverpool’s greatest forwards, said he was surprised Salah did not pursue a move to a more prestigious European club such as AC Milan or Juventus.

“I was convinced he’d end up at an AC Milan or Juventus or somewhere like that, maybe his wages were a problem.”

Carragher believes Salah still belongs among Europe’s elite

Salah departs Liverpool as one of the greatest players in the club’s history after an extraordinary spell at Anfield.

The winger played a key role in helping the Reds win two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups, alongside the Community Shield.

Despite entering the latter stages of his career, Carragher believes Salah’s hunger and obsession with maintaining elite numbers could have pushed him towards another major European adventure.

“But he’s like Ronaldo, he’s so driven, his numbers mean so much to him. I thought, he can still do this in Turkey by the way, but I thought he’d want to play at a real prestigious club.”

Carragher suggested financial demands may have limited Salah’s options but felt the forward could have adjusted his expectations to secure a move to one of Europe’s traditional giants.

“Obviously his wage demands have put a few people off but I thought he might almost curb those demands a little bit to almost get a better club.”

Salah begins new chapter after Liverpool legacy

During his time at Liverpool, Salah established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent attackers, becoming one of the club’s all-time leading scorers and a symbol of the team’s transformation under Jürgen Klopp.

His decision to join Trabzonspor represents a different challenge, with the Turkish club hoping his arrival can help them return to domestic dominance.

Trabzonspor last won the Turkish league title in 2022 and are looking to rebuild their squad around Salah’s experience, quality and leadership.

Carragher, though, feels the Egyptian’s ability deserved another opportunity on the biggest European stages.

“To go to an AC Milan or Juventus or whoever it may be, play at the San Siro, still playing in big games, still playing in Europe. Turkey just feels like… I just think he’s better than that.”

Trabzonspor prepare grand welcome for global superstar

While Carragher remains unconvinced by the choice, Salah appears delighted with his next chapter.

Trabzonspor are preparing a major presentation ceremony at Papara Park, where fans will officially welcome their new star signing in what is expected to be one of the biggest moments in the club’s recent history.

For the Turkish side, Salah’s arrival is not just a statement signing but a declaration of ambition as they attempt to challenge for silverware again.

The Egyptian forward now faces the task of proving that his influence can extend beyond Europe’s traditional powerhouses and inspire Trabzonspor to another golden era.
