I hope Congo wins AFCON 2025 – Vincent Kompany
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has spoken passionately about the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the competition deserves greater respect and should never be underestimated.
The Belgian tactician, who has Congolese roots, admitted he would be delighted to see Congo lift the trophy at AFCON 2025, pushing back against long-standing debates that have questioned the value of the tournament.
In recent years, the competition has often been downplayed by some pundits, while several European clubs have shown reluctance in releasing players for international duty during the AFCON period. Kompany, however, made it clear that the tournament holds deep meaning for African footballers.
Speaking ahead of Bayern’s clash with Mainz while addressing Nicolas Jackson’s expected departure for the competition, Kompany said, “My understanding is that he will travel after the game against Mainz. We hope he goes as far as possible. Of course, I hope Congo will win the cup, but otherwise I wish him all the best. The importance of this competition for African players shouldn’t be underestimated.”
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals are set to kick off in Morocco next weekend, with teams across the continent battling for continental glory.
