‘I can’t make compromises about things crucial for success’ – Nora Hauptle on Ghana departure

Former head coach of Ghana’s national women’s football team, Nora Hauptle, has revealed the reasons behind her decision not to renew her contract following the expiration of her tenure in December 2024.

Hauptle, who guided the Black Queens to qualification for this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, reflected on the challenges that led to her departure after successfully securing Ghana’s spot in the continental competition.

Prior to Hauptle’s appointment, Ghana had failed to qualify for the tournament since 2018.

In an interview with Swiss media outlet 20 Minutes, Hauptle explained the difficulties she faced during contract negotiations with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“It wasn’t easy to give up the project. My contract was running out at the end of the year and we had discussions. But there were a few pieces of the puzzle that were not clear, which were relevant to my success.

“I can’t just make compromises but nothing happened; we are parting on good terms and with a lot of respect for each other.”

Following her departure, she has taken on the role of head coach for Zambia, where she will lead the Copper Queens in this year’s WAFCON, competing in Group A alongside Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo.
