I am considering offers from South Africa – Argentine coach Rodolfo Zapata
Argentine coach Rodolfo Zapata says he is weighing up offers for a possible return to South Africa’s Premier Soccer League after ending his stint in Jamaica earlier this year.
Zapata has been unattached since parting company with Montego Bay United in February, following a campaign in which he helped stabilise the club in the Jamaican top flight.
The 59-year-old is no stranger to South African football. He previously handled the now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces in the PSL and has also worked elsewhere on the continent with Botswana giants Township Rollers and Gaborone United, among others.
In an interview with KickOff.com, the Buenos Aires-born coach expressed admiration for the level of competition in South Africa and made clear his interest in a second spell in the league.
“After a successful season in the Jamaican Premier League, I am definitely considering opportunities to be back in Africa, to be back in South Africa,” he said.
“I have had the privilege of coaching six teams there, and I currently have several proposals on the table. I am carefully analysing them to see which one aligns best with my goals.
“PSL is a very competitive league, and I would be proud to work in such an environment again. If the club’s vision matches my winning mentality and attacking style of football, it could be a great opportunity.”
Zapata noted that clubs of the calibre of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to deliver football that not only wins matches but also entertains supporters.
“Top clubs like Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, you can name them, are expected to play attractive, attacking football that excites the fans.
“But at the same time, they must achieve consistent results, and I love the challenge to build winning teams,” he added.
He explained that his coaching philosophy is rooted in Argentina’s traditional emphasis on possession and technical quality.
“The style of Argentine football is essentially based on ball control, which means proper technique and effective use of possession. The same style that gave me great satisfaction as a player now defines my philosophy as a coach.”
