Hull City agree €25m deal for Senegal defender Nobel Mendy after World Cup omission

Hull City are set to sign Senegalese defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano in a deal worth up to €25m, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the 21-year-old moving to the Premier League after a breakthrough season in Spain.

The transfer is understood to include a 12.5% sell-on clause, while Mendy’s former club Real Betis will receive 20% of the fee.

Mendy, a left-footed central defender, will leave Rayo Vallecano after establishing himself in La Liga. His performances had led many to expect him to be included in Senegal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

However, he was left out of Pape Thiaw’s extended selection, with the Senegal manager opting instead for Moustapha Mbow. Mbow was also absent from the final squad after a difficult performance against the United States.

Mendy has won one senior cap for Senegal. The defender, who was born in Guediawaye, moved to France at the age of 11 after beginning his football education in Senegal.

He made his international debut in March, playing 43 minutes in a 3-1 victory against The Gambia.

His emergence in Spain has been built on a profile that remains highly sought-after in modern football. Mendy combines physical strength with technical ability and the confidence to play from the left side of central defence, while his age suggests there is still significant room for development.

The move represents a major step in his career. Rather than remaining with the eighth-placed team in La Liga last season, which also reached the final of the UEFA Conference League, Mendy will join a Hull City side returning to the Premier League after a five-year absence.

Hull are attempting to assemble a squad capable of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship. The club’s recruitment of Mendy reflects the ambition of a newly promoted team, but the switch also carries considerable risk for a young player.

Mendy will join a squad that includes Nigeria internationals Semi Ajayi and David Akintola, as well as Algeria international Mohamed Belloumi.
