Huijsen’s Camp Nou performance strengthens Mourinho’s Real Madrid defensive plan

Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen produced a commanding display in the 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday, delivering the kind of performance that has been demanded of him in the biggest matches.

Huijsen’s ability on the ball and potential to become one of Europe’s leading defenders have never been in serious doubt. However, performances in several important fixtures had raised questions about whether he could consistently meet the demands of the highest level.

The derby against Atletico Madrid and a number of Clasico appearances intensified those concerns. According to Marca, Huijsen finally answered them in Barcelona with a composed and authoritative performance that showed he is ready to compete on the most difficult stages.

The Spain defender was among Real Madrid’s outstanding players. He was strong in challenges, decisive when defending and concentrated throughout the 90 minutes, producing the complete display manager Jose Mourinho had been seeking.

The statistics reflected his influence. Huijsen made 10 clearances, completed 16 defensive interventions and recorded four interceptions. Even when Barcelona applied sustained pressure, he held his position, timed his challenges effectively and showed the necessary authority in dangerous situations.

His contribution was not limited to his work without the ball. Huijsen completed 37 of his 45 passes, giving him an accuracy rate of 83%, with seven of those passes breaking through defensive lines.

That distribution proved particularly valuable when Barcelona’s press disrupted Real Madrid’s usual passing options. Huijsen recognised when to play safely over short distances and when to find another route beyond the first defensive line, helping his side relieve pressure during the most difficult periods of the match.

The combination of defensive strength and composure in possession explains why the performance represented more than simply a good evening at centre-back.

It was also significant because of Huijsen’s recent history. His struggles at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2025 and 2026 had led to doubts about his ability to perform on football’s biggest stages. Inconsistency during the previous season also prevented him from establishing the level expected after his move to Real Madrid and ultimately contributed to his omission from the 2026 World Cup squad.

Mourinho’s influence

Jose Mourinho has played a central role in Huijsen’s development. The Portuguese coach has helped the centre-back add greater defensive aggression and resilience without taking away the qualities that make him effective when his team has possession.

Huijsen appears increasingly comfortable in a system that demands intense concentration, energy and competitiveness in every attack. There is still room for improvement, but he is beginning to turn his considerable ability into more consistent and complete performances.

His current form strengthens his position in the Real Madrid defence. With Eder Militao approaching the end of his recovery and working towards full fitness, the partnership of Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen has emerged as Mourinho’s preferred option.

The victory in the Clasico provided strong evidence for that decision and gave Huijsen important confidence as he seeks to establish himself during a decisive stage of the season.

Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026. Racing Santander play Real Madrid in La Liga on 01 November 2026.
