Hugo Broos reveals price tag for Brazil and Argentina friendlies in South Africa
South Africa coach Hugo Broos has lifted the lid on the financial demands behind arranging high-profile international friendlies on home soil ahead of the 2026 World Cup this summer.
Speaking ahead of the national team’s upcoming fixtures, Broos revealed that both Brazil and Argentina had expressed interest in playing in Johannesburg—but with hefty price tags attached.
“I talked to Lydia, the CEO, and she told me that Brazil wanted to play against us at home, they wanted $5 million. A few months ago Argentina also wanted to play against us in Johannesburg, and they wanted €5 million,” Broos said.
The comments shed light on the complex negotiations involved in bringing marquee teams to South Africa, illustrating the challenge smaller federations face when trying to host top-tier international sides.
While friendlies are often seen as preparation and fan engagement opportunities, Broos’s revelation underscores the financial balancing act required to make them happen.
The South African Football Association has yet to confirm whether talks with either South American powerhouse will progress, but Broos’s candid disclosure has sparked discussion among fans about the cost—and value—of high-profile matches at home.
Meanwhile, South Africa will play Panama in a back-to-back friendly game as part of their preparations for the Mundial slated for this summer in North America.
