South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has offered a candid assessment of Al Ittihad midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch, acknowledging the player’s strong performances while casting doubt on his role in the national team ahead of the World Cup.

Speaking to MSW, Broos praised the attacking midfielder’s current form but raised concerns over squad balance and selection competition in his preferred position.

“Lorch is playing well, I’ll be honest… but if you take him to the World Cup, who do you leave out?” Broos said.

The Belgian tactician further highlighted the tactical challenge posed by Lorch’s role in the team setup.

“He plays behind the strikers… so tell me, who should I drop?” he added, underscoring the depth of options available in South Africa’s attacking midfield department.

Lorch, who currently plays for Al Ittihad, has been in solid form at the club level, reigniting debate over his place in Bafana Bafana’s long-term plans as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.

Broos’ comments are expected to fuel further discussion among supporters and analysts about selection priorities as South Africa continue preparations for the global tournament.

South Africa will come up against Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea in Group A.
