World Cup 2026: Hugo Broos names two new players in South Africa’s final 26-man squad
South Africa have unveiled their final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with coach Hugo Broos introducing two new players in Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross as part of his final tournament selection.
The Bafana Bafana boss has largely stuck with his trusted core group, but the inclusion of the uncapped duo adds fresh energy ahead of the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Makhanya, a centre-back, and Cross, a left-back, were both absent from the qualifying campaign but now have the chance to earn their first international caps. The pair could feature in Friday’s warm-up match against Nicaragua or during the World Cup itself.
Cross’s selection comes at a time when Aubrey Modiba’s fitness has been under attention, following his injury setback that kept him out of Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League final second leg. Modiba, however, still makes the final squad, along with Samukele Kabini, who also provides cover at left-back.
Kabini, who plays for Molde in Norway, adds further international experience to the defensive unit.
Up front, Burnley striker Lyle Foster will lead the attack for South Africa, as Broos names a squad heavily dominated by players based in the domestic league, with 19 of the 26 players coming from South African clubs.
Veteran midfielder Themba Zwane also features, bringing leadership and composure to a squad expected to be Broos’ final international project before retirement.
The 74-year-old coach has already confirmed that the tournament will mark the end of his managerial career. Interestingly, Broos also ended his playing days at the World Cup, representing Belgium at the 1986 tournament in Mexico where they finished fourth.
South Africa will be making their fourth appearance at a World Cup finals, having previously qualified in 1998, 2002, and as hosts in 2010. On all three occasions, they exited at the group stage and will be hoping to finally progress beyond the opening round in 2026.
