Hugo Broos defends himself amid controversy over South Africa Mbekezeli Mbokazi remarks

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has denied accusations of racism and sexism following comments about Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s late arrival at the Bafana Bafana training camp ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 20-year-old Orlando Pirates player reportedly missed his flight due to what Broos described as some nonsense, prompting the coach to criticise both the player and his agent.

The remarks sparked complaints from the UDM, accusing Broos of racist and sexist behavior.

I am neither racist nor sexist. I have played with and coached people of color in Algeria, Cameroon, and South Africa, Broos said. Some may find me stubborn, but no one can call me racist.

Broos stressed that his frustration was directed at the coaching staff for mismanaging the situation.

When Mbokazi arrived late, I was furious—not just at him, but at those who tried to justify his lapse in professionalism, he explained.

He also highlighted the importance of protecting the young player’s career.

At 20, Mbokazi needs proper guidance to avoid poor decisions. He is talented and humble, but inexperienced.

Acknowledging the impact of his remarks, Broos offered an apology: I am deeply hurt by what has happened, especially as my family has suffered. My remarks were inappropriate, and I wish to apologise.

Bafana Bafana, who finished third at the last AFCON, are now based in Marrakech for the 2025 tournament, where they will face Zimbabwe, Egypt, and Angola in the group stage.
