HSV lose Albert Sambi Lokonga for Everton friendly

Hamburg will have to do without Albert Sambi Lokonga in their high‑profile friendly against Everton on Saturday, with the midfielder ruled out after stepping away from full training.

According to local reports, he followed an individual programme on Friday and will not be in the squad.

The Belgian had already missed the second training session on Thursday, as noted by the Hamburger Morgenpost. For now, HSV have not given a clear explanation for his tailored workload. Recently, Lokonga struggled with neck problems, but those were considered resolved, adding a layer of uncertainty to his absence.

Head coach Merlin Polzin must therefore prepare for a demanding test against Premier League opposition without one of his central midfield options. Pre‑season matches are key for rhythm and structure, so missing Lokonga comes at an awkward moment.

HSV will also remain without winger Fabio Balde, who continues to recover from a bout of fever and is still training individually. His ongoing absence reduces attacking depth and limits the coach’s ability to experiment with wide combinations. Supporters hoping to get a first look at the new‑look side against Everton will have to wait a little longer to see both players in action.
