HSV challenge two-game ban for Philip Otele

Hamburger SV are fighting a proposed two-match suspension for winger Philip Otele after his controversial red card in the Nordderby against Werder Bremen.

According to Hamburger Abendblatt, the DFB sports court initially handed the 27-year-old a two-game ban, prompting HSV to file an appeal and trigger a fresh hearing.

Otele was sent off in the 79th minute following a VAR review. Referee Florian Exner had originally allowed play to continue after Otele appeared to accidentally step on Cameron Puertas’ leg, but after viewing the replays he upgraded the incident to serious foul play and showed a straight red card. The decision sparked debate, with many observers arguing the contact was unintentional and that a dismissal was too harsh.

HSV are now hoping the suspension will be reduced when the case is re-examined in the coming days. A final verdict is expected soon and could prove important for Hamburg’s run-in, as they seek to keep one of their attacking options available during a decisive phase of the season.
