Own goals hand Orlando Pirates league title

Orlando Pirates were crowned South African Premiership champions on Saturday after a dramatic final-day 2-0 win over Orbit College, with both goals coming via costly own goals that sealed a landmark title and ended Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-year grip on the league.

The Buccaneers edged the season by a single point, finishing top of the 16-team table ahead of Sundowns to claim their first league crown since 2012 in a tense and emotional conclusion to the campaign.

In a match that swung on fine margins, Orbit College were left to rue two defensive disasters at Mbombela Stadium. Deep into first-half stoppage time, goalkeeper Sabelo Nkomo failed to deal with a corner and punched the ball into his own net under pressure from the Pirates attack.

Just after the restart, more misfortune struck the visitors. On 49 minutes, defender Ndumiso Ngiba attempted to clear his lines while under pressure but ended up lofting the ball over his stranded goalkeeper and into his own net, doubling Pirates’ advantage in the most unfortunate of circumstances.

Those two moments proved decisive as Pirates held firm to secure the victory that confirmed their place at the summit of South African football and brought an end to Sundowns’ long-standing dominance of the domestic game.

The triumph carries added significance for the Soweto giants, who had finished runners-up to Sundowns in five of the previous eight seasons. This time, however, they finally crossed the line under Moroccan head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, completing a domestic treble in a breakthrough campaign.

Celebrations erupted in front of a packed 45,000 crowd in Mbombela as Pirates supporters witnessed their side return to the top of South African football after more than a decade of waiting.

For Orbit College, the afternoon ended in heartbreak. Despite finishing level on 24 points with Magesi, they were relegated back to the second tier due to an inferior goal difference after just one season in the top flight.

Their fate added further drama to a final day already defined by tension at the top, especially with Sundowns having completed their fixtures earlier due to CAF Champions League commitments. The reigning champions were in Morocco preparing for the second leg of their continental final against AS FAR, holding a narrow 1-0 lead.

Pirates’ title-winning campaign was built on consistency and resilience. After losing their opening two matches of the season, they recovered impressively to win 21 games, draw six, and suffer only one more defeat — a home loss to Sundowns in February.

What began as a shaky start ultimately turned into one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s modern history, with the decisive final-day victory arriving in the most unexpected fashion through opponent errors.

The result not only ends Sundowns’ eight-year stranglehold on the PSL but also signals a major shift in South African football, with Pirates re-establishing themselves at the summit after years of near misses and rebuilding.
