Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar, now a key figure at Al-Ittihad, shared insights into his career decisions and his transition to Saudi football after leaving AS Roma in the summer of 2024 for €12 million.
The Toughest Challenge
Reflecting on his early career, Awar recalled the difficulties of balancing school and football, noting that long training hours after school made his journey challenging but rewarding. “I grew up in France, helped me a lot to achieve my dream in football, especially the Lyon Academy, which contributed to the exit of many stars who moved to European and Asian clubs,” he said.
Memories of Roma
His time at Roma was significant, particularly under José Mourinho. “Playing with Jose Mourinho was amazing, and I learned a lot of it. He is one of the best coaches in history, and a fun man in the dressing room, but when it comes to competition, he becomes different,” Awar recalled.
Why Al-Ittihad?
Awar was drawn to Al-Ittihad by its growing league and the presence of big names. “Laurent Blanc (the coach) consulted before I came here, and I spoke with Benzema,” he said, emphasizing the club’s promising project.
