Tensions overshadowed the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final first leg between USM Alger and Olympique de Safi after controversy erupted over the absence of a Moroccan flag on Houari Ferhani’s jersey.

The match, which ended goalless, was accompanied by widespread reaction off the pitch when the Algerian defender, representing the Moroccan side, appeared in the first half wearing a shirt that did not display the national flag, unlike those of his teammates.

The incident quickly gained attention on social media, where it triggered heated debate and political interpretations.

Ferhani later addressed the situation, moving to clarify the circumstances surrounding the issue and dismiss any suggestion of intent.

He explained that the incident resulted from a simple oversight rather than a deliberate act. “ Salam, I want to clarify that this error came from the baggage handler; I didn’t notice it because I was focused. The situation was rectified in the second half ,” he stated to reassure the fans.

The explanation was supported by Olympique de Safi, who defended their player against accusations circulating online. Club officials stressed that there had been no refusal on the part of the defender to wear the correct jersey.

According to the club, the situation was purely logistical and was corrected promptly once identified during the match.

They further emphasised that Ferhani had shown no reluctance to comply with club standards, insisting that the incident should not be interpreted beyond a simple mistake. The club reiterated that the full-back “ never refused to wear the jersey with the Moroccan flag .”

Despite the swift clarification, the episode briefly shifted attention away from the sporting contest itself, which remains finely balanced ahead of the return leg.

Both sides will now look to refocus on the decisive second encounter, where qualification for the final will be at stake.

Club officials also highlighted Ferhani’s positive adaptation since joining the Moroccan outfit, noting that he regards the country as a second home.

With the misunderstanding addressed, attention is expected to return fully to football matters as the competition enters a crucial stage.
