Egypt’s national football coach, Hossam Hassan, has reportedly decided against facing Cameroon in the upcoming June international break due to significant absences in his squad.
The decision, which has sparked controversy, stems from concerns over Egypt’s weakened lineup.
With star player Mohamed Salah set to be rested for the fixtures, alongside the absence of key players such as Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush and those from Al Ahly—who will be involved in the Club World Cup—Hassan has voiced his apprehension about the team’s chances.
Despite overseeing a strong start to his tenure with 8 wins, 3 draws, and just one defeat since his appointment in February 2024, Hassan fears that a loss to Cameroon, combined with the reduced squad strength, could jeopardize his position as coach.
Sources close to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) suggest that the possibility of a defeat might lead to his dismissal, putting him in a difficult position given the team’s current situation.
In light of these challenges, Hassan has reportedly identified Comoros as a more manageable opponent.
The Comoros team, which Egypt has previously faced twice during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, is seen as a less daunting challenge.
Egypt defeated Comoros 4-0 in the second leg after a goalless draw in the first leg. Hassan is said to consider the Comoros match as a safer option given the circumstances.
While Egypt’s upcoming fixtures are critical for the team, Hassan’s decision to avoid the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Libya has raised eyebrows.
Whether his choice will be validated by the EFA remains to be seen, but the Egyptian coach’s careful strategy highlights the challenges of managing national teams during such a crucial period.
