Hossam Hassan, the legendary top scorer of the Egyptian national football team, has finally assumed the role of head coach, succeeding Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria.
Vitoria was dismissed following a dismal 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Cote d’Ivoire, having exited the tournament in the Round of 16, losing to DR Congo on penalties.
The Egyptian Football Association’s surprising move contrasts with their recent announcement of Mohamed Youssef as the interim coach.
Hassan, who scored 69 goals in 178 international matches during his playing career, now embarks on his second international coaching stint after leading the Jordanian national team from 2013 to 2014.
The 57-year-old’s coaching journey began in 2008 with the Egyptian club, followed by stints with various teams, including Al-Masry, Zamalek, Telecom Egypt, Ismaily, Smouha, and Al-Ittihad of Alexandria.
His most recent coaching position with Modern Future FC was cut short as he seized the opportunity to guide his beloved national team.
The announcement also introduced Ibrahim Hassan as the team manager, with the assistant staff yet to be revealed.
Hassan’s appointment brings anticipation for his first assignment, possibly a clash with Croatia.
As Egyptian football enthusiasts celebrate the childhood hero’s return, the focus shifts to the new chapter under Hassan’s leadership.
