HONOR X5d s launched in South Africa with dual-screen design and 6000 mAh battery

HONOR has launched its new X5d s smartphone in South Africa, with Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams among those impressed by the device’s dual-screen design.

The Chinese smartphone brand is one of Bafana Bafana’s sponsors, while the national team has enjoyed a strong run of results. South Africa began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with a 2-1 victory over Guinea at Orlando Amstel Arena, followed by a 5-0 win against Eritrea in Egypt.

Pitso Mosimane’s side then defeated Egypt in Egypt, completing a perfect international window and moving into the top 50 of the latest FIFA ranking.

“Always in focus, on and off the pitch. With the HONOR X5d s, the rear screen gives you twice the screen to capture every win,” said Williams.

With consumers facing an increasingly wide range of smartphones, many options sit in the mid-tier or premium sections of the market. HONOR said it was targeting customers looking for an entry-level device, while aiming to retain strong design and technology features.

The HONOR X5d s is available in Forest Green and Midnight Black. It has a 6.78-inch main display and a 2.01-inch secondary screen on the rear. The main screen has a resolution of 720×1576 pixels, while the rear display has a resolution of 240×296 pixels.

The primary screen offers peak brightness of 600nit and is protected by aluminosilicate glass. The two-screen layout is designed to provide a broader viewing experience for activities including watching skits and streaming films.

Its rear display also functions as a live preview window for one-tap selfies, allowing users to frame photographs using the phone’s back screen. A “Select a Pet” feature offers interactive digital animals that respond to touch, sleep when the phone is idle and remain visible on the rear display.

The phone’s rear camera has a 50MP sensor and supports 4X digital zoom. On the front, a 5MP camera can record video at 1080P, or 1920×1080 pixels. These specifications are intended to support photography and video recording at events ranging from graduation ceremonies to Amapiano shows.

Power comes from a 6000 mAh Lithium-ion polymer battery, supported by 15W charging. HONOR says the capacity is designed to keep the device running through extended days out, including time spent at shopping centres or football grounds.

The X5d s also has IP52 water and dust resistance, offering protection through Spring and the Festive Season.

The HONOR X5d s has a recommended retail price of R2 499. It will be available nationwide in Forest Green and Midnight Black from 7 October 2026.
