Hojlund backs Cristiano Ronaldo after copying Portugal star’s celebration

Rasmus Hojlund defended Cristiano Ronaldo after Denmark’s 4-2 defeat by Portugal in the Nations League, saying millions of people around the world still admire and draw inspiration from the Portuguese forward.

Hojlund was one of the main talking points despite Denmark’s loss in Thursday’s third-round match, after celebrating his goal in Ronaldo’s trademark style.

The Danish striker scored in the 53rd minute when he broke clear of the Portugal defence and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. With the keeper advancing, Hojlund lifted the ball over him and watched it settle in the net.

He then ran towards the side of the pitch, jumped and performed Ronaldo’s famous “Siu” celebration, including the accompanying shout.

According to Tribuna, Hojlund explained his gesture after the final whistle and delivered a direct message about the situation surrounding Ronaldo.

“I just wanted to send a strong message to the Portugal national team that if they do not appreciate Cristiano, there are many people around the world whom he has inspired and who still admire him,” Hojlund said.

The comments underlined the 21-year-old’s respect for Ronaldo’s legacy and standing in football.

Ronaldo did not feature against Denmark after leaving Portugal’s camp angrily, with tensions having increased between him and manager Jorge Jesus over his limited involvement.

Despite Hojlund’s goal, Portugal secured a 4-2 victory. The result left Denmark beaten in a match in which the attention was also drawn to the tribute to Ronaldo, who remains a prominent figure for the Portuguese side despite being absent.
