Mauritania made history by qualifying for its first continental competition after defeating Senegal 2-0 in the return leg of the CHAN 2014 qualifiers. Despite losing the first leg 1-0 in Dakar, the Mourabitounes were determined to turn the tide in this double confrontation.
Ahmed Moulaye gave Mauritania the lead with a crucial goal in stoppage time of the first half. Senegal, needing to take risks, found themselves further behind when Taghiyoullah Denne scored in the 57th minute. Despite both teams having opportunities, Senegal couldn’t capitalize on chances, and the match ended 2-0 in favor of Mauritania.
This historic qualification for the CHAN (African Nations Championship) is credited to the efforts of French coach Patrice Neveu, who has been with the team for two years. Neveu faced challenges, including the resignation of his assistant due to health reasons and difficulties with officials and local coaches. Nonetheless, his commitment to hard work and developing local players has paid off.
Neveu’s experience on the continent, having previously coached Guinea, adds to his coaching credentials. The question remains whether he will continue his work with Mauritania, as his contract is set to expire in January.
