Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has raised uncertainty over the potential debut of Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka ahead of Saturday’s Championship clash against Oxford United, revealing that personal circumstances could delay his first appearance.
Onyeka, who joined the Sky Blues on a winter loan from Premier League side Brentford, was expected to integrate quickly into Coventry’s midfield with an obligation to make the move permanent should the club secure promotion to the top flight.
Since his arrival, Onyeka has been training with the squad at the CBS Arena and was anticipated to feature immediately.
However, Lampard confirmed that Onyeka’s wife is due to give birth imminently, leaving his availability for the weekend fixture uncertain.
“He’s been training with us since Tuesday, so he’s been with us,” Lampard told the Coventry Telegraph. “His wife’s due to have a baby at any moment, so that’s obviously a big positive for him, but we have to keep an eye on that in terms of this weekend.”
Lampard praised Onyeka’s professionalism and integration into the squad, describing him as humble and seamless in joining the group.
The former Chelsea manager highlighted the qualities Onyeka is expected to bring once available, including his physical presence, ball-winning ability, and ability to drive play forward.
Lampard noted Onyeka’s experience at the highest level, referencing his Premier League stints and performances at the recent AFCON, emphasizing the midfielder adds a new dimension to Coventry’s existing squad.
Nicknamed ‘Frank the Tank’ for his combative style, Onyeka aims to overcome a challenging start to the season and make a meaningful impact as Coventry target promotion.
Lampard believes his arrival will strengthen competition in midfield and provide a fresh tactical option for the club. If he makes his debut, Onyeka could quickly become a key figure in Coventry’s push for Premier League football, blending experience, physicality, and leadership on and off the pitch.
