Himad Abdelli opens up on tough start at Marseille, credits Bruno Genesio for rebuilding his confidence

Himad Abdelli has admitted that his first months at Marseille were difficult, but says the trust of head coach Bruno Genesio has helped him rediscover his confidence.

The Algeria international joined Olympique Marseille from Angers during the 2026 winter transfer window. He struggled to settle at first and believes he placed too much pressure on himself because of his affection for the club.

“Last year, I was struggling. Maybe I put pressure on myself because everyone knows I love Marseille. The coach freed me a little, so yes, I am a different player. Last year was complicated,” Abdelli told reporters on Wednesday.

He was speaking ahead of Marseille’s Europa League match against Olympiacos. The 26-year-old midfielder said Genesio’s support has allowed him to express himself more freely on the pitch.

Abdelli’s recent form offers encouragement. He started Marseille’s 2-0 win over ESTAC on Sunday and scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

That strike should strengthen his confidence heading into a busy period for Marseille. Abdelli will now hope to build on the momentum and secure a more regular place in Genesio’s side.
