Ghana’s Black Queens kicked off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations journey with a tough 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda on Monday.
The opening match in Group C saw Banyana Banyana score two quick goals in the first half, using their experience and sharp attacking play to gain control early. Although Ghana fought hard and showed flashes of quality, they couldn’t recover from the early setback.
Alice Kusi almost gave Ghana the lead with a fierce effort that rattled the crossbar, while Evelyn Badu struck the post with a close-range header. Ghana created chances but failed to take them, and South Africa made them pay with clinical finishing.
Now under pressure, the Black Queens face must-win matches against Mali and Tanzania. There’s hope of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams, but Ghana will need sharper finishing and tighter defending to stay alive in the tournament.
The road ahead is tough, but not impossible. A swift response could still keep their WAFCON dreams alive.
