Ghana’s Black Queens are in danger of crashing out early at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a tough 1-1 draw with Mali in their second Group C match on Friday in Berkane.
Following an opening 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa, the Queens needed a win to stay alive in the group. Despite a strong start, they couldn’t hold on for three points, setting up a do-or-die clash against Tanzania on Monday.
Ghana started well at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, striking in the sixth minute when Alice Kusi fired home to give them an early lead. The Queens continued to push for a second but couldn’t find the net again before halftime.
Mali came back stronger in the second half and were rewarded in the 52nd minute. Aissat Traore punished a defensive mistake to level the score, beating Ghana’s goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan Findiib.
The result leaves Mali on four points and close to the knockout stage, while Ghana sits on just one point and must win their final group game to survive.
