Hervé Renard set for another stint with an African powerhouse

Former Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Hervé Renard is reportedly on the verge of returning to the Ivory Coast national team, with French media suggesting an official announcement could be made within the next 48 hours.

According to Le Parisien, the 57-year-old Frenchman has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Emerse Fae, whose contract with the Ivorian Football Federation has expired.

If appointed, Renard would return to one of African football’s most prestigious jobs just months after Ivory Coast enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their recent history.

Surprise change after Fae’s success

The decision not to extend Fae’s contract has come as a surprise following the achievements he oversaw during his time in charge of the Elephants.

Fae took over in early 2024 after replacing Jean-Louis Gasset and guided Ivory Coast to victory at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in front of their home supporters.

The former midfielder then continued his impressive work by leading the West Africans to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated after a 2-1 defeat by Norway in the round of 32.

Despite that setback, the tournament represented the country’s best-ever World Cup campaign.

Renard seen as ideal candidate

According to Le Parisien, the Ivorian Football Federation believes Renard is the right man to lead the team into the next cycle, with preparations already under way for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Renard is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in African football, having enjoyed trophy-winning spells across the continent.

His experience and familiarity with the African game are believed to have made him the federation’s preferred choice for the role.

Return to familiar territory

The French coach has attracted interest from several national teams in recent months, but reports suggest Ivory Coast has become his most likely destination.

The federation, led by president Idriss Diallo, is looking to build on the momentum created by recent successes and believes Renard’s experience can help the Elephants remain among Africa’s leading football nations.

For now, no official confirmation has been issued, but all indications suggest that Renard could soon be back on the touchline with one of the continent’s traditional powerhouses.
