Hervé Renard, the celebrated French coach known for leading Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations triumphs, has shared insights into why he did not take the helm of Senegal’s national team.
After leaving his post with the French women’s team, Renard was linked to Senegal’s coaching role, following Aliou Cissé’s departure.
Augustin Senghor, President of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), had shown openness to Renard’s candidacy.
However, a crucial stipulation regarding his staff led to a breakdown in discussions.
In a revealing interview with Le Monde, Renard explained;
“There were discussions. I had a wish to have Omar Daf, a former Senegalese international, as assistant.”
Renard expressed that bringing Daf, who is currently the coach of Amiens SC in France’s Ligue 2, was integral to his plans.
However, he added, “This condition was not possible to fulfil immediately. So, I decided at that precise moment to withdraw my candidacy.”
Although Renard recognized the position’s appeal, describing Senegal as “one of the best African selections,” he felt his preferred support structure was essential to undertake such a significant role.
For now, Pape Thiaw remains interim coach as Senegal heads into the final qualifiers for Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, with the search for a permanent coach ongoing.
