Morocco’s U17 national team is determined to secure the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on home soil, head coach Nabil Baha has said.
Speaking at a press conference in Salé, the former Atlas Lions forward expressed confidence in his squad ahead of the tournament, which runs from March 30 to April 19, 2025.
“We have quality players. We are lucky to be playing at home and in front of our fans,” Baha said during the squad announcement at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.
The Moroccan coach underlined his belief in the team’s ability to deliver a strong performance, emphasizing the importance of motivation and home support.
“I am confident, and the players are very motivated. This Cup will stay here,” he declared.
Tough group stage challenge
Despite the optimism, Baha dismissed suggestions that Morocco had been handed an easy group in the tournament.
“We’ve done a lot of video analysis of the teams that play in our group. They’re athletic, and they work well,” he explained.
Morocco has been drawn into Group A alongside Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia.
While some may see this as a favorable draw, Baha stressed that African football has become highly competitive at all levels.
“Today, there are no longer any small nations in Africa,” he said. “Our Lion Cubs are capable of competing and winning against any team.”
Support for age verification measures
Baha also welcomed the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to implement wrist tests to verify the ages of players participating in the tournament.
The measure is aimed at ensuring fairness and maintaining a level playing field in youth competitions.
“This test will allow for greater fairness and athletic competitiveness between young players with the same physical abilities,” he noted.
Tournament set to begin in Mohammedia
The 2025 U17 AFCON will kick off on Saturday, March 30, at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, where Morocco will face Uganda in their opening match.
In addition to El Bachir Stadium, matches will also be held at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, the Berrechid Municipal Stadium, and the El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida.
With the host nation setting its sights on retaining the title, all eyes will be on Baha’s squad as they look to capitalize on home advantage and make history on Moroccan soil.
