Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that William Saliba remains committed to the club, despite increasing speculation linking the defender with a high-profile move to Real Madrid this summer.
Saliba, who is of Cameroonian descent, has attracted strong interest from the Spanish giants, with reports suggesting he is a priority target as Madrid look to revamp a defensive line plagued by age and injuries.
At just 24, the French international has developed into one of the most consistent centre-backs in Europe, anchoring Arsenal’s backline throughout a demanding season.
The former Saint-Étienne man has made 48 appearances in all competitions this campaign and is widely regarded as a vital part of Arteta’s system.
With his current contract running until 2027, Arsenal are reportedly eager to offer him improved terms to further secure his long-term future.
Speaking to the press, Arteta played down concerns over the player’s potential exit and revealed that he had personally spoken to Saliba about the situation.
“What I’m certain, because I had the conversation with him, is that he is so happy here, that he wants to continue with us,” the Arsenal boss said.
Although Arteta acknowledged that negotiations take time, he appeared relaxed about the ongoing speculation, suggesting both the club and player are aligned in their intentions.
“What will happen in the future with our negotiations have to take time… and (we want to) be on top of them, but I’m quite confident that William is very happy here and that’s the place that he wants to be.”
