Harrison Afful Departs Espérance de Tunis After Six Trophy-Laden Seasons
Ghanaian international Harrison Afful is set to leave Espérance de Tunis after six years with the Tunisian giants. The 29-year-old defender, a cornerstone of the club’s domestic and continental success over the past decade, is now a free agent following the breakdown of contract renewal talks with the club’s management.
Afful, who joined the Blood and Gold in 2009, has played a pivotal role in one of the most successful periods in Espérance’s recent history. During his time in Tunis, he won five Tunisian league titles and was instrumental in helping the club lift the CAF Champions League trophy in 2011.
Despite his enduring importance to the team—evident in his inclusion in the starting XI during their recent 3-0 defeat to Al Ahly in the opening round of the CAF Champions League group stage—Afful and Espérance could not reach an agreement on a contract extension.
Now entering a new phase in his career, the seasoned full-back is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs in Portugal and the Gulf region, though no deal has yet been finalised.
Afful’s departure marks the end of an era at Espérance, where he was celebrated not only for his consistency and work rate but also for his ability to deliver in high-stakes matches. As he awaits his next destination, the Ghanaian veteran leaves Tunisia with a legacy of silverware, professionalism, and loyalty.
