Barcelona’s head coach Hansi Flick has signaled his approval for the club to reignite their chase for Athletic Bilbao’s rising star Nico Williams, as reported by Sport.
The 21-year-old winger, who dazzled at Euro 2024 with Spain, was heavily linked with Barca during the summer transfer window but opted to remain with Athletic for another year. Now, with Flick’s backing, the Catalan giants are ready to test the waters again.
Williams opened up about the tug-of-war he faced last summer. In an interview with La Revuelta TV, he shared how his Spain teammates at Barca wouldn’t let up.
“It was difficult,” Williams said. “On top of that, the ‘bastards’ of [Barca] Lamine [Yamal] and [Alejandro] Balde and others didn’t help. They would say to me ‘brother come now, come now.’” He added that the constant messages from his Barca pals made it tough to tune out the hype.
With Flick’s green light, Barcelona could land a game-changer in Williams, whose flair and potential have already turned heads across the footballing world.
