Hansi Flick defends emotional Lamine Yamal

Hansi Flick has moved to explain and defend Lamine Yamal after the teenager showed clear frustration during Barcelona’s 2–0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The 18-year-old reacted several times to heavy tackles and contentious refereeing calls in a bruising night at the Metropolitano.

Flick stressed that Yamal’s attitude came from his competitive edge, not a lack of professionalism. “Lamine is upset, but from the start of the match in defense and in attack he has been impressive. He’s 18 years old and he’s doing a huge job, we have to help him,” the Barca coach said, underlining how much responsibility already rests on the youngster’s shoulders.

He went further, predicting a huge future for the winger at international level. “For your country, he will be one of the best in history. The referees must protect players like him, Vinicius, Pedri…” Flick added, calling for greater protection for technically gifted attackers.

The coach framed Yamal’s visible anger as a natural response to the intensity and physicality of the tie, while insisting his overall contribution was one of Barcelona’s brightest positives despite the disappointing result.
