Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei has cautioned against comparing the current Black Stars squad to the legendary 2010 team.

Speaking in the wake of Ghana’s recent form, the former Schalke 04 defender emphasized that the two generations operate in entirely different footballing contexts.

Sarpei, a key member of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, noted that the core of that team had been built over several years.

He highlighted that by 2010, the group possessed a level of cohesion, maturity, and “big personalities” that the current rebuilding side simply hasn’t developed yet.

According to him, the 2010 group benefited from a stable core of players who had played together for nearly four years, creating a chemistry that defined their success on the global stage.

In contrast, the current Black Stars are navigating a period of significant transition. Following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the subsequent dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, Sarpei pointed out that the new crop of players is still finding its identity.

“Don’t compare our [2010] squad with this squad. Totally different. I think our squad had players with more confidence, more experience, bigger players, and I think also our team had been playing together for three or four more years,” Sarpei told Joy Sports.

“We knew each other, we knew what we could do, we knew we had confidence, and we could beat every team. That’s why I think it’s different.

“Now, the team didn’t go to the Nations Cup, new players are coming, there are a lot of issues about the coach, the players, and so many things are going on.

“So it’s not easy for the whole team, and we don’t have 11, 12, or 13 players where you say, ‘Oh, this could be the team’ [for the World Cup].”

Ghana has been drawn into a challenging World Cup group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
