Hamza Abdelkarim takes historic step with Barcelona after impressive pre-season

Barcelona forward Hamza Abdelkarim has made his first-team debut in a competitive match, becoming the first Egyptian to play for the club in an official fixture.

The 19-year-old was introduced in the closing stages of Barcelona’s 5-2 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, replacing Raphinha. Abdelkarim was on the pitch when Barcelona scored their fifth goal to complete another league win.

His appearance was the reward for a strong run of form during pre-season, when he finished as Barcelona’s leading scorer with four goals. The club said his performances in friendly matches and training had earned him the opportunity to feature for the senior side.

Abdelkarim’s competitive debut represents a significant moment in a rapid rise that has gathered pace over the past year. He joined Barcelona on loan from Egyptian club Al Ahly last season before the Spanish club made the move permanent this summer.

The forward also represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, despite still being registered as an Under-19 player at the time. His progress has therefore seen him move quickly from youth football into the plans of one of Europe’s leading clubs.

Barcelona highlighted the historical importance of his first-team appearance, saying Abdelkarim had written his name into the club’s records by becoming the first Egyptian footballer to wear the Barcelona shirt in an official match.

His debut also made him only the third Egyptian player to appear in La Liga. He follows Ahmed Hossam “Mido”, who became the first Egyptian to play in Spain’s top flight when he represented Celta Vigo, and Haissem Hassan, who played for Real Oviedo last season.

Although Abdelkarim’s involvement against Rayo Vallecano was brief, it marked the latest stage of a breakthrough that began during Barcelona’s preparations for the new campaign. His four goals during pre-season helped draw attention to his ability, while his work in training strengthened his case for a first-team opportunity.

Barcelona described the appearance as another important landmark in the striker’s development after he impressed following his promotion into the senior squad during pre-season.

The club’s decision to retain him permanently this summer, followed by his involvement in La Liga and his place in Egypt’s World Cup squad, underlines the progress he has made in a short period. His debut also places him alongside Mido and Haissem Hassan as the latest Egyptian player to feature in the Spanish top flight, while giving Abdelkarim a place in Barcelona history.
