Hamburger SV have reached an agreement with Slavia Prague to sign Nigerian international Igoh Ogbu on loan with an option to buy, just days before the close of the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old centre-back, who joined Slavia Prague in January 2023 from Norwegian side Lillestrøm for €2.5m, has established himself as one of the standout defenders in the Czech First League.

His reading of the game, composure under pressure and strong leadership have been central to Slavia’s defensive structure, earning him widespread recognition.

Ogbu’s consistent performances in Prague had already drawn interest from across Europe, with Olympique Lyonnais previously monitoring his progress.

Despite extending his contract with Slavia until June 2027 earlier this year, the opportunity to move to Germany now looks set to become a reality.

Talks between Hamburg and Slavia Prague have been ongoing in recent days, with both parties keen to finalise a deal that will see Ogbu join the 2. Bundesliga club on an initial season-long loan.

The agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the campaign.

Hamburg head coach Merlin Polzin has been a strong advocate for Ogbu’s signing, viewing the Nigerian as an ideal fit for his back three.

Polzin is understood to value Ogbu’s aerial strength, ability to anticipate danger and leadership qualities, which he believes will significantly bolster his squad’s defensive stability.

Ogbu, who hails from Jos in Nigeria, recently broke into the Super Eagles set-up, earning three international caps this year.

Keen to take on a new challenge, he is reportedly enthusiastic about the chance to test himself in Germany and compete in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

According to Transfermarkt, Ogbu’s market value currently stands at €11m, reflecting his rising profile and the potential upside of Hamburg’s loan deal.

If he adapts quickly and delivers in the 2. Bundesliga, the club could move swiftly to trigger the purchase option.

Hamburg are preparing for a demanding league campaign, with their next fixture a daunting clash against reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The club’s supporters will hope that Ogbu’s arrival provides both immediate defensive reinforcement and long-term stability as they push for promotion back to the top flight.

For Ogbu, the move represents a pivotal step in his career — an opportunity to showcase his talent on a bigger stage while helping Hamburg in their quest to return to German football’s elite.
