Hakimi injury concerns

Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi has emerged as a fitness concern after featuring in a high-intensity UEFA Champions League semi-final despite ongoing physical issues, casting doubt over his availability for the remainder of the season and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Paris Saint-Germain right-back started the first leg against Bayern Munich while managing a thigh problem that had already raised concerns in recent days. Hakimi had previously felt discomfort in his hamstring during a Ligue 1 fixture against Angers SCO, where he was withdrawn at half-time as a precautionary measure.

Initially cleared to play by the club’s medical staff, head coach Luis Enrique opted to trust the defender in one of PSG’s most important matches of the season. However, that decision now appears to carry significant risk, as Hakimi struggled with visible discomfort throughout the encounter.

Concerns intensified in the closing stages when the Moroccan defender suddenly went down moments before the final whistle, clutching the back of his leg. With all substitution opportunities already exhausted, he was forced to continue until the end, raising fears that the issue may have worsened.

His condition now places serious doubt over his involvement in the return leg, as well as PSG’s upcoming fixtures. Reports indicate that the problem resurfaced late in the game, described as thigh pain that could range from severe cramping to a more serious muscular injury.

Speaking after the match, Luis Enrique attempted to calm fears but stopped short of offering certainty. “The injuries? Mostly cramps. We’ll see how things develop. I hope Achraf’s issue is nothing more than severe cramps.,” Enrique said.

Despite the reassurance, the lack of a clear diagnosis leaves room for concern. Hakimi’s situation will be closely monitored in the coming days as PSG prepare for the decisive second leg, with the club also mindful of the wider implications for Morocco ahead of major international competitions.

While no official setback has been confirmed, the decision to field the defender despite prior discomfort could yet prove costly. At this crucial stage of the season, playing through pain introduces a layer of uncertainty that may impact both PSG’s European ambitions and the player’s longer-term fitness.
