Hakimi and Mane named among Africa’s two 2026 Ballon d’Or nominees

France Football has announced the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with Senegal forward Sadio Mane and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi the only African representatives.

The nominations provide further recognition for two of the continent’s leading players, who continue to perform at the highest level despite taking different career paths. Hakimi has enjoyed another standout campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, while Mane remains a key figure for Al Nassr and the Senegal national team.

Hakimi’s influential season with Paris Saint-Germain

Hakimi’s inclusion follows another outstanding season in the colours of Paris Saint-Germain. The Morocco international has again made a significant contribution from full-back, combining attacking energy with consistency and an ability to influence important matches.

He played a part in the major successes achieved by the Parisian club, including their campaigns in the Champions League and Ligue 1, as well as the UEFA Super Cup.

Across the season, Hakimi made 32 appearances, scoring three goals and providing nine assists. Those figures underline his importance to the Paris Saint-Germain system and represent an impressive return for a defender.

The nomination also confirms Hakimi’s growing status among the leading full-backs in world football. He finished sixth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting and has continued to strengthen his reputation since then.

Hakimi is also captain of the Atlas Lions and has spoken about the close bond within the Morocco squad. “Nous sommes devenus une famille” was among the headline remarks linked to his historic achievements, his relationship with Luis Enrique and preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

His latest nomination places him among the leading contenders for the most prestigious individual award in the sport.

Mane recognised once again

Mane has also retained his place among the game’s elite after another season in which his influence and consistency have remained evident.

The Senegal forward, who now plays for Al Nassr, is still regarded as one of the most experienced and accomplished African players of his generation. His attacking efficiency, extensive experience at the highest level and important role with Senegal have all contributed to his latest nomination.

Mane’s presence on the shortlist is particularly notable because he now plays outside Europe. His selection alongside Hakimi means the pair are the only representatives of the African continent among the 30 candidates for the Ballon d’Or.

The nomination also highlights the continuing importance of Mane to Senegal’s national team, where he has been a central figure during a period of major international exposure for the country.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on 26 October.
