Hakim Ziyech says Botafogo move is ‘not the end’ of his career

Hakim Ziyech says his move to Botafogo is not a final chapter before retirement and insists he did not join the Brazilian club for financial reasons.

The 33-year-old Morocco international spoke exclusively to Africafoot days after completing his move, explaining why he chose to continue his career in Brazil after spells in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Ziyech said he wanted a fresh challenge in a league he considers unique and to rediscover the enjoyment of playing football. His decision, he stressed, was not driven by money.

The attacking midfielder also addressed his recent spell at Wydad Casablanca. His return to Morocco had generated significant expectations, but Ziyech said he had not gone back to the country for financial reasons. Instead, he described the move as one based primarily on personal and sporting considerations.

His switch to Botafogo then offered a different opportunity at a time when he was ready to begin another stage of his career. The proposal, previously revealed by Africafoot, persuaded him to take on a new challenge outside Morocco.

Ziyech has signed with Botafogo until the end of 2028, but made clear that his arrival in Brazil should not be viewed as the conclusion of his playing career. “I did not come to Brazil to finish my career,” he said.

The former Chelsea player’s future with Morocco also remains unresolved. Ziyech has not ruled out returning to the national team, but believes any recall must be earned through his performances on the pitch.

His comments leave open the possibility of another appearance for the Morocco national side, while making clear that his immediate focus is on establishing himself with Botafogo.

The club are due to play their rearranged match from the 21st round of the Brazilian championship against Gremio shortly.
